Although the internet and high-speed data networks have made packet radio sit in the backseat since the late 90's, there are still a lot of folks using it and maintaining the infrastructure. It's still alive and kicking, and a great way for technician class hams to get involved with digital emergency communications.
SOTA has been carefully designed to make participation possible for all Radio Amateurs and Shortwave Listeners - this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers (who either operate from home, a local hilltop or are even Activators on other summits).
Winter Field Day is a communications exercise. WFD is held on the last full weekend in January. WFD can be worked from the comfort of your home or in a remote location. You can participate by yourself or get your friends, family, or whole club involved. Winter Field Day is open to participants worldwide.
